To be honest, I was a little dubious about getting an electric log splitter just because I was worried it would either be too slow or just wouldn't have the power to split decent size logs. However, I bought this one, 16 ton, horizontal electric, and I am very happy I did. It is quiet enough to not require ear protection like the gas ones do. It sounds about like a swimming pool filter pump when the motor is running. The loudest thing you hear when splitting wood is the crunching of the log as it splits. It sounds like someone (a really big someone) eating a huge apple or carrot. It usually goes right through anything I can fit on the rail.
I split about 7 cord of wood ranging from 3 inch beech to about 24 inch oak logs in the last 3 days. In all that wood, it probably bogged down maybe 4 times when I was trying to get it through big 3 way branch knots. But with some repositioning, I always got the log split. 99.9% of the time, it would just motor right on through. With the two stage hydraulic pump, if it can't get through in "high" range, it automatically switches to "low" range and pushes right on through.
This splitter appears to be well made and heavy duty and has operated very reliably. It is made in the USA which is another plus.
The one I got is wired for 120 volts; so just have a 20 amp circuit available. I have a full kitchen in my basement with multiple 20 amp circuits available and I have 20 amp circuits to my rear deck outlets. I then use a 100 foot 3x12 gauge extension cord and I am in business.
It is also really nice that it is quiet. I was talking to my next door neighbor (his house is about 1000 feet away through the woods) and he didn't know I was splitting. Normally we can hear each other when we are running power equipment.
I am VERY HAPPY with this splitter. Especially, because I no longer need to borrow my brother-in-law's gas splitter which I don't think is even as powerful or fast as this electric one. I would definitely buy this one again if I had the choice now and would recommend it to anyone.
